The rugged, untamed stretch of North Devon—holds a legendary status. It is a landscape of golden
sands, rolling Atlantic swells, and dramatic biosphere reserves that consistently deliver some of Europe’s
most exhilarating breaks.

But what is it that turns casual holidaymakers into devoted wave chasers, and how can you immerse
yourself in this celebrated surf culture without missing a beat?
Here is why Devon remains an international draw, and why Southover Beach Apartments is the ultimate
home base for your oceanic adventure.

The Allure of the Atlantic Swell

Woolacombe beach

Devon is geographically blessed. Flanked by two coastlines, the northern shore acts as a magnet for
powerful Atlantic low-pressure systems. Unlike the Mediterranean’s placid waters, the Atlantic offers
relentless, predictable swells that travel thousands of miles to unload their energy onto Devon’s
beaches.

For professionals and intermediates, this means consistency. Spots like Woolacombe and the
neighbouring Croyde are famous for their hollow, fast-breaking waves. In fact, Croyde is frequently cited
as one of the best beach breaks in the UK, offering low-tide barrels that can rival more tropical
destinations. For beginners, the vast expanse of Woolacombe Bay provides gentle, rolling beach breaks
that make learning safe and enjoyable at high tide.

Beyond the technical quality of the waves, it is the scenery that sets Devon apart. Surfing here isn’t just
a sport; it’s an aesthetic experience. The coastline is framed by the Exmoor National Park and the North
Devon Coast, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. You aren't just riding a wave; you are looking back
at green cliffs, rugged headlands, and pristine, uncrowded sand.

Surfing Events & the Competitive Calendar

The Devon surf scene is vibrant year-round, fueled by a calendar of competitions that draw elite talent
and energetic crowds. While the  ocean racing events highlight the region’s paddling strength,
North Devon remains the heart of board surfing .
Although the famous British Surf Champs moves between locations, North Devon consistently hosts
qualifying heats and local showdowns like the Woolacombe Surf Festival and various longboarding
competitions. Autumn and winter are particularly exciting spectacles; this is when the Atlantic winter
swells arrive, creating perfect conditions for heavy-water surfing events.
Even during the off-season, the water is buzzing. Events like the "Mount Kelly Sessions" and regional surf
life-saving competitions cultivate the next generation of talent, proving that the cold water doesn't
scare off the dedicated.

Surfing Celebrities to Look Out For

When you surf in Devon, you are sharing the water with royalty. The region has produced some of the
biggest names in global big-wave riding. Keep an eye out for:

Andrew Cotton: Arguably the most famous big-wave surfer in British history. Cotton is a Devon
native. Known for towing into monster swells at Nazaré, Portugal (riding waves over 80 feet),
Cotton calls the Devon coast his training ground. He also runs a local surf school, so you might
just spot him paddling out at his home break.

Ben Skinner: While technically a Cornish export, Skinner is a giant of British surfing. He is a
multiple-time European Longboard Champion and an ambassador for the outdoor lifestyle that
defines the South West.
These athletes don’t just put the UK on the world map; they validate the conditions of the North Devon
coast as world-class training grounds.

What our customers say...

We have stayed at Southover Beach Apartments many times in the last two years, and I have to say they are by far the Self Catering apartment of choice in Woolacombe. We have stayed in at least two of the apartments ('Garden' - nice open plan, but only apart. with no sea views, and 'Honeymoon' - fantastic upstairs/downstairs style with a spiral staircase). The front patios/balconies give unrivalled views along the beach to Putsbrough and Baggy Point - what better way to start the day looking down the beach whilst still in bed. The Steam Room is awesome after a days surfing/swimmimg, and the overal decor and layout of the accommodation is just stunning. The couple who run Southover are extremely friendly and willing to either give as much advice and help as you wish, or respect your privacy if you do not! Last time we stayed, we arrived late, and as Food is hard to come by in Woolacombe after 9pm, they even offered us some much needed supplies to see us through until the morning (not including the bottle of wine greeting us on arrival!). So popular is this accommodation, we tried to book to come down in September out of season, and can't get in! If anyone has any doubts about staying in this accommodation, then rest assured, you will not find a better mix of luxury, location and comfort in Woolacombe, or Devon or even the South West for that matter.
