Mark Twain once said: "The more I learn about people, the more I like my dog”
Imagine a place where golden sands stretch for three miles, the surf crashes against rugged headlands, and your four-legged best friend is not just tolerated but genuinely welcomed. Welcome to Woolacombe, North Devon’s crown jewel and a true paradise for dog lovers.
At Southover Beach, we understand that your dog is part of the family, which is why we are proud to be a pet-friendly establishment, offering specific apartments designed to accommodate your well-behaved pooch. But the fun doesn't stop at the doorstep. The beauty of Woolacombe is that the adventure is just beginning, and it’s an adventure you can share with your furry companion.

A World of Coastal Adventures
There is a reason Woolacombe is a top choice for dog-friendly holidays. The area offers a fantastic variety of activities that cater to both you and your dog’s sense of exploration.
The Beach (and its Rules)
Of course, the main attraction is the beach. While there are seasonal restrictions on the main section, there is always plenty of space for your dog to run free. During the peak summer months (April 1st to September 30th), it’s best to head to the southern end of Woolacombe Sands beyond Mill Rock, or Putsborough, where dogs are welcome off-lead all year round. Always look for the local signage to know exactly where you can go.
Spectacular Cliff-Top Walks
For those who prefer a view from above, the walking is simply spectacular. The South West Coast Path weaves its way through the area, offering breathtaking scenery.
- Morte Point: Starting from the nearby hilltop village of Mortehoe, this rugged National Trust headland offers a roughly four-mile circular walk with views over the Bristol Channel. Keep your dog on a lead near the cliffs and grazing livestock, and you might even spot grey seals basking on the rocks below.
- Baggy Point: On the southern end of the bay, this is a slightly gentler clifftop walk with an easy path that is ideal for older dogs. The views from the point are simply stunning.

Charming Villages and Dog-Friendly Pubs
After a long walk, nothing beats a refreshing drink at a dog-friendly pub. Mortehoe is a beautiful, historic village with pub gardens that welcome dogs. In Woolacombe itself, there are plenty of options, including The Barn , which looks out over the bay, and The Tides Inn, known for its local ingredients and dog-friendly policy. Venture a little further to the bustling harbour town of Ilfracombe, where you can walk the quayside and find numerous dog-friendly cafes before viewing the famous "Verity" statue.
Keeping Your Pooch Safe in a Heatwave
While the sun brings out the beauty of North Devon, it also brings responsibility. Heatwaves can be dangerous for our furry friends. Here are some essential tips to keep your dog cool and safe while enjoying your holiday:

- The Pavement Test: Before you step out for a walk, press the back of your hand to the pavement for five seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for their paws.
- Walk Early or Late: Avoid the midday heat. Plan your big walks for the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler.
- Hydration is Key: Always carry fresh water and a portable bowl for your dog.
- Know the Signs of Heatstroke: Heavy panting, excessive drooling, vomiting, and collapsing are serious signs of heat exhaustion. If your dog appears unwell, move them to a cool place, pour cold (not icy) water over them—avoiding their face—and contact a vet immediately.
- Cooling Down: Provide cooling mats or a paddling pool. You can also offer ice cubes in their water bowl or frozen treats like peanut butter or yoghurt to help them cool down.
The Perfect Base for Your Adventure
Your holiday in Woolacombe is about creating unforgettable memories. By choosing Southover Beach, you're choosing a base that welcomes you and your dog with open arms. From the golden sands to the coastal paths and welcoming village pubs, Woolacombe is waiting for you and your best friend.
